How to Choose a Longboard Skateboard: Complete Guide

The world of Longboard Skateboarding is vast and offers a wide range of possibilities. There are many shapes, sizes, and types, so getting one can be a bit of a headache. For this reason, at Mundo Surf, we want to provide you with all the information about longboard skateboards so that you have all the data to choose the one that suits you best.

Differences between Skateboarding and Longboarding

A few years ago, we used to call any board supported by four wheels a “skateboard.” Over time, this sport evolved, and different modalities emerged. Currently, distinguishing between skateboarding and longboarding can be confusing for an audience that is not part of this world, but there are substantial differences.

First and foremost, the size and characteristics of the boards differ significantly. A skateboard, as a general rule, is usually around 32” (83 centimeters) long and about 8” (19-21 centimeters) wide. It has a very distinctive shape, with a concave design and a raised nose and tail to facilitate performing tricks. For this reason, skateboards have small trucks and their wheels are around 5”, perfect for rolling on a hard and smooth urban surface.

On the other hand, any board that exceeds 36” (91 centimeters) can be considered a longboard. It is designed for sliding on sloping urban surfaces, so the trucks are considerably larger and higher. The wheels are softer and larger compared to skateboards. The shape varies greatly depending on the modality.

Types of Longboards

Over the past years, different longboard modalities have emerged, and gradually, various boards with different characteristics have been developed. Nowadays, there are numerous modalities. Below, we will decipher the main ones:

Carving Longboard

Carving is a practice inspired by surfing and is commonly referred to as ‘surfskate’ due to its similarity in movements to surfers riding waves. It also bears resemblance to snowboarding, requiring smooth turns. To achieve this, you need a truck with a pivoting mechanism and a slightly concave shape, which helps in executing those distinctive turns. Carving longboards are typically taller, with ample space between the wheels and the board to avoid wheel bite during turns.

It is a modality that provides great enjoyment. However, caution should be exercised as it involves some level of difficulty.

Dancing Longboard

As the name suggests, dancing longboarding involves dancing on the board while moving on it. This practice has gained popularity in recent years, thanks to numerous videos shared on social media platforms like Instagram. To engage in dancing longboarding, you will need a considerably long and wide board with significant flexibility to withstand all the movements and weight shifts. The wider board provides greater stability due to the increased distance between the trucks.

Since flexibility is essential, dancing longboards are often constructed with bamboo and fiberglass materials.

Cruising Longboard

Cruising is often the favorite practice for beginners in the world of longboarding. As the name suggests, it involves leisurely riding or “cruising” around. It is a perfect modality to enjoy the surroundings, although less spectacular than other disciplines. The shape of the board bears some resemblance to surfboards, with large wheels that allow for navigating obstacles encountered along the way.

Freestyle Longboard

Freestyle or freeride is a modality where there are no rules. It is all about free expression and creativity. Each skater chooses the longboard they feel most comfortable with, so there is no specific board for this style. However, it is advisable to have a board with a slightly raised tail for easier trick execution. The wheels are usually smaller and harder, providing better slides.

Freestyle requires a certain level of skill and caution, so we always recommend using gloves, helmets, and other safety accessories.

Downhill Longboard

The downhill modality involves descending slopes. It is common to reach high speeds due to inertia, so it is advisable to protect yourself with all the necessary gear. The longboard should have a low height, smooth and hard wheels, and fast bearings.

Regarding the board, it is usually similar in size to freestyle boards. The trucks should have a wide distance to provide stability, and the board should be rigid.

How to Choose a Longboard

Choosing a longboard skateboard is not an easy task, especially if you’re new to this world. The market offers a wide range of options, but if you pay attention to these key aspects, you will hit the mark and choose the perfect longboard for you.

Choosing Wheels

Wheels are a fundamental part of longboarding. Not all wheels are the same or have the same characteristics. Let’s focus on two key aspects: hardness and diameter.

The diameter of longboard wheels typically ranges from 60 mm to 130 mm, although the most common sizes are usually between 60 mm and 70 mm. Keep in mind that larger wheels will provide more speed and better absorb shocks caused by bumps or cracks in the road.

The hardness of the wheel indicates its grip on the asphalt. Wheel hardness is measured using the ShoreA scale and usually ranges from 75a to 100a, with lower hardness wheels being more commonly used. Wheels with a hardness of 75a to 87a are considered soft, those from 88a to 95a are intermediate, and wheels above 96a are considered hard. Keep in mind that harder wheels offer less grip.

Choosing Trucks

Trucks are the metal components that connect the wheels to the board. Depending on the width of the board, the truck size will vary. Typically, trucks measure between 150mm and 180mm. Trucks with rear pivots are the most common and provide more stability and maneuverability.

Longboards for Beginners

As we have seen, the size, shape, flexibility, and materials determine the performance of a longboard. If you are new to longboarding, keep in mind that longer longboards offer more stability but are less maneuverable. Opt for models that are closer to cruising style. They are perfect for improving your skills before venturing into other modalities.
