How to sand your surfboard

The Sanding is a delicate stage in the manufacturing process of a surfboard.

For this final step in making your surfboard, you will need a rotary sander and sanding discs of different thicknesses: 80, 120, 180, 240, 360 and 500.

Start sanding with 80, to make the board perfectly smooth. Then, sand successively with 120, 180, 240, 360, 500, and finish with 500 + water. In the rail area, it´s recommended to make a manual sanding, to reduce the risk of sanding the fiberglass. When sanding, you should only sand the resin layer, never the fiberglass! If you sand the fiberglass, you’ll see on your surfboard the squares of the fiberglass cloth, which is not a good sign…

If you are not satisfied with the result, you always have the possibility to make a new gel coat, thiner than the first one, and sand again!
